COMPETITIVE EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY THEATRE PHOTOGRAPHY
We have decided to organize a competition of the best theatre photography to raise awareness of this original and somewhat neglected art. The aim of the exhibition is to use the awarded photographs to dokument the current state of the Czech theatre and contemporary theatre photography, motivate the community of theatre makers and photographers, and provide a space for professional reflection of their work.
We have received 1‚348 photographs taken by 121 artists in 2015–2017, and divided them in two categories: Professional Photography (Production and Portrait in the Role) and Student Photography (Free theatre photography theme). The five-member jury of experts (Chairman Josef Ptáček, Anna Hejmová, Kamila Polívková, Jaroslav Prokop, and Ondřej Svoboda) have awarded three main prizes and several honourable mentions in each category. They have also selected almou a hundred photographs for the exhibition in Prague’s Municipal House. The winners will be announced, and the prizes presented, during the official opening of the exhibition on 9 May 2018.
The aim of this showcase is not only to highlight the photos selected by the panel and to present them, but mainly to provide a more global perspective of current photography and compare the works of contemporary artists in relation to the aesthetics of theatre photography found in the works of, amongst others, Miroslav Hák, Václav Chochola, Karel Drbohlav, Jaromír Svoboda, and Jaroslav Krejčí.
